Celebrating The History of African American Music

February is "Black History Month" and in honor of this Grandview Elementary School presented their "Black History Program" on February 28th.  The theme of the program was Celebrating the History of African American Music.

Mrs. Tamika Fleming, Principal, opened the program by greeting everyone and a few remarks.  Robert Williams and Miracle Wimbush lead the Pledge of Allegiance .  A'tesiyah Swain welcomed everyone and made the Statement of Purpose of the program.

The History of African American Music was told by the 4th & 5th grade LinC students. Examples of the different music was heard.

The program had a special guest!  The Troy University Gospel Choir performed a special Gospel Musical Performance under the direction of Dr. James Brown.  The song "My Hallelujah Belongs to You", was led by Grandview alumni, Michael Anderson.  After the performance of the choir Dr. Brown was presented a plaque of appreciation.

Kindergarten through second grade participated in a Black History Coloring Contest and third through the fifth grade had a Black History Quote Artistic Expression Contest. The winners were announced from each class and then the overall winners for each grade level.  All the winners were presented prizes and the overall winners were presented gift cards provided by St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, School Adopter.  Congratulations to these students for an awesome job!!

Mrs. Fleming closed the program by thanking everyone that attended.

A special thank you to Ms. Tonya Branham and Dr. Phyllis Medley, Black History Program Coordinators!  These two ladies made this an AWESOME performance! They worked with the students, gathered music for the "History of African American Music, and scheduled the Troy University Gospel Choir.

Grandview would also like to thank St. Matthew A.M.E. Church for providing the gift cards for the contest winners.
